The Malta Gay Rights Movement was set up in 2001 and is the only National organisation that represents the interests of Malta’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. The MGRM is defined as a socio-political non-governmental, non-profit organisation, independent of any political party, civil authority or religious and commercial institution, which has as its central focus the challenges and rights of the Maltese lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. The aims of the organisation are:
- To increase acceptance and equality among the LGBT community
- To educate society with a view to challenge myths and common misconceptions about different sexual orientations and gender identities;
- To act as a lobby group promoting legislative changes to achieve equality for LGBT individuals within society;
- To identify, address and prevent acts of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity;
- To provide support services for LGBT individuals, their families and friends;
- To provide information on LGBT issues;
- To set up and run an information centre for the general public on gay and lesbian issues;
- To ensure an active presence in society by networking with government, institutions and commissions as well as with non-governmental organizations.
