The MOSAIC – One in Diversity Project is to celebrate the Year of Equal Opportunities for all is a collaboration between the National Commission for the Promotion of Equality and nine civil society and National authority partners, including the Commissioner for Children’s office, European Network Against Racism, Federazzjoni Maltija ghall-Organizzazzjonijiet Persuni b’Dizabilita, Kunsill Nazzjonali to’ l-Anzjani, Kunsill Nazzjonali taz-Zghazagh, Malta Confederation of Women’s Organisations, Malta Gay Rights Movement, National Council of Women, National Youth Information Centre. The project objectives are to address the fears and misconceptions that lie behind discrimination and increase the awareness of the negative effects on society. The project is a campaign to promote non-discrimination based on the six recognised grounds of discrimination by the European Union that are Race and Ethnicity, Sexual Orientation, Gender, Age, Religion or Belief, Persons with Disability. The end result is to have created an equality platform so the various partners can increase their reach and further their co-operation to the main goal of anti-discrimination. The basis of the project comes from the European Year of Equal Opportunities for all which is based upon the societal integration of all and to have a foundation of social justice. The Commissions Social Agenda for 2005-10 mirrors this in its attempt to ‘tackle structural barriers’ and in 2005 a framework strategy for non-discrimination and equal opportunities was established, assumingly to reinforce individual legal protection as well as develop a positive approach to the promotion of equal opportunities as they plan on mobilising all relevant stakeholders and EU policies for the goal. The project consists of training on the discrimination grounds for different groups in the pubic and private sphere like human resource managers, governmental equality committee representatives, media and the general public, a publicity campaign, a film festival and more active activities such as children’s competitions, diversity days and forum theatre.
